A rug is not a carpet. It’s a piece of textile art, often with hand knotted construction, natural fibres and dyes that took weeks or months to set. Cleaning it like wall to wall carpet is the fastest way to ruin it. At Fletchers we treat every rug individually: we identify the fibre, test the dye, pick the safest method, and clean it at the pace the fibre allows. Whether it’s a $300 hallway runner or a hand knotted heirloom, the level of care is the same.
Our rug cleaning service in Melbourne covers every common type and many uncommon ones. We’ve cleaned wool, silk, viscose, cotton, jute, sisal, polypropylene and bamboo rugs. We’ve washed Persian, Afghan, Turkish, Tibetan, Indian and Pakistani hand knots. We’ve also cleaned modern shag, flatweave kilims, hide rugs, machine woven Belgians and supermarket synthetics. In home cleaning: suitable for most synthetic rugs, modern machine woven wool, hallway runners and rugs in good condition with no severe staining. Truck mounted hot water extraction; dry in 6 to 8 hours.
Workshop hand wash: used for hand knotted Persian, silk, antique, oversized, severely stained, or pet damaged rugs. Free pickup and delivery across Melbourne metro. Returned in 3 to 5 days for wool, up to 10 days for silk.
For valuable rugs, the workshop process mirrors the methods used in traditional rug houses for centuries, modernised for hygiene and speed but never compromised. After dust removal and colour testing, the rug is gently saturated with cool water and a neutral pH wool soap. We work the soap through the pile by hand with soft brushes, rinse thoroughly to flush every trace of detergent, then dry flat with controlled airflow until fully dry through the foundation. This is the only way to clean a hand knotted rug without crushing the pile, blurring the dyes or damaging the foundation knots.
Wine, coffee, ink, pet urine, vomit and old mystery stains are part of normal rug life. We pre treat every visible stain with a fibre appropriate solution before the main wash, then re inspect after the rug has dried. Pet urine in particular needs specialist attention because the acidity can permanently shift wool dye if left for months. We’ll always be upfront about what’s recoverable and what isn’t, before we start. Our enzyme treatment for odour breaks the source down rather than masking it, and is included with every clean.
Cotton fringes on Persian and oriental rugs absorb most of the foot traffic and discolour first. We clean fringes separately by hand, often returning them visibly whiter without bleaching. If a fringe has been damaged by previous over cleaning or moth, we can recommend reputable repair specialists.
We quote rugs per square metre based on fibre, construction and condition. Synthetic rugs start at $8/m², pure wool from $14/m², and hand-knotted Persian from $22/m². There is a $120 minimum for in-home jobs. Pickup, delivery, stain pre-treatment, odour treatment and fringe cleaning are all included we don’t quote a base rate and then load on extras.
